I’m not just going to sit here and tell you how to use Twitter or how not to use Twitter. There are a approximately 637 other blog posts out they that can tell you that. Instead, I’m going to show you. Below you will find two interesting Twitter encounters I had in the past two weeks. One exceptional example, and one not so exceptional example.
The Good
All I can say is Starbucks tweeted me! And they wished me a happy birthday! That’s probably the closest I’ll ever get to a real celebrity tweet so I guess I should just enjoy it. But seriously, that’s the way to do Twitter. That’s the way to be SOCIAL. Keeping your customers engaged. That’s the point isn’t it.
The Not So Good

Note: Business has been blurred to save them from further embarrassment. In case anyone is curious the business in question is a coffee shop in Florida.
It’s time for a game of How Many Things Can You Find Wrong With This Conversation? The Correct Answer: Everything. Except my clever response of course ;) So funny story. Upon receiving this tweet I went to check out their page to find out who the hell was spamming me. Turns out I found about 20 similar messages begging for followers. I retweeted the screenshot and few minutes later received another tweet from telling me they deleted all of their previous posts and asked me to delete mine. Then they unfollowed me. I think they got upset that I called them out. I just like to think I gave them a free lesson in social media etiquette.
So there ya go. I’d love to hear any good stories of social media successes or epic failures you might have encountered so share away!

Wow. Really? Nice work calling them out on that! High follower counts are cool and everything, but there’s no need to beg people to follow you. Even if you did live in Florida, their tweets would still come off as desperate. I kind of feel bad for them!
I’m also amused by people’s auto DMs that beg me to follow them on every other social network known to man.
“Thanks for following me! Please also follow me here, here, here, and here…” No thanks!
Perhaps someday people will learn…

Ugh. I can’t stand the auto-replies either! You want to thank me for following you, then follow me back! haha.

I think lot of people don’t use Twitter because they don’t know how. Twitter has it’s own thing going on. There’s nothing worse than repeatedly begging your fans to follow you on Twitter. If you see no one is responding you need to take a better look at how you are asking for them to do you a favor. That is a problem. Why should they do you a favor. Make it interesting for them. The bottom line is that you want to entice become your followers on Twitter not force them.
Exactly! Or a lot of people that use Twitter don’t understand the idea of interaction and engagement and think it’s just a giant bulletin board. I guess you just have to learn from experience.
